Spent n exorbitant amount of time online yesterday following the Bat-Flek controversy! It was quite obvious I was no where NEAR alone in my disdain for the casting choice of Ben Afflek as the new Batman! The only supporting comments I could fin were from Kevin Smith and Chris Rock. It was hilarious on the verge of insanity kind of dismay!
Here's a few of my favorite comments (and the only ones suitable for printing here)
Wil Wheaton ✔ @wilw
Really looking forward to seeing Affleck bring the depth and gravitas to Batman that he brought to Daredevil and Gigli.

A huge contingent of fans went as far as to petition the US Government to make it illegal for Ben Affleck to play Batman. Of course the Government declined, but they did have over 6000 signatures! And that's not the extent of it. Many more petitions are being hurled at Warner Brothers to reverse this travesty.
OK, so let me qualify my position on this. They could have made a worse choice, but then they could probably make a better one. No, I did not sign any petitions as I realize that that is a futile gesture. Ben Afflek holds a lot of sway in Hollywood (he did play Superman in Hollywoodland) especially with the success of Argo and as the negotiations were reportedly intense, I don't foresee anyone backing out of it.
After a 24 hour mourning period I had time to reflect on the matter. A friend of mine on Facebook did point out something that I think the fans aren't taking into account and that's the controversy surrounding the original casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker. Even some of the folks associated with the production of Batman 2 (the second 2....) thought he was wrong for the part.
Obviously A LOT of folks were wrong with that assessment!
SO who knows? Affleck has developed his chops over the years and perhaps we should forgive him for Gigli, Daredevil, Reindeer Games....there are others and hope with fingers crossed that he can pull this off.
Also, updating my speculation surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch. It was announced this morning that he left the upcoming del Touro project due to an overload of work and that it WAS NOT due to another new project.
Well, perhaps I'm being a tad bit Polyanish about it, but my hopes are that that statement is just a smoke screen. We will have to wait and see.
Affleck is about to pull a Keaton on alla y'all.

You read for a part, you feel good about it, you feel confident, then they cast Ben Affleck.

Ah, Steven, Steven, Steven...
ReplyDeleteYou might want to consider switching to decaf for a bit. It's really only just a movie about a couple of old comic book characters. It'll be a low-dough answer on Jeopardy! before you know it. It's not like it's going to feed the naked or clothe the starving.
Or convince people to ride bicycles.
To true, but it makes for good copy! After all, the whole concept for this blog is to respond to the banal in a hopefully entertaining manner. As political as I can get, I try not to comment on the really important (and all together depressing) matters that besiege our Globe daily. Light, airy and devoid of substance. That's our motto!
ReplyDeleteOh, I have to admit, it sure beats the news!!!
ReplyDeleteAs for "Worse Batmans" (Batmen?), how about Ben Stiller instead of Ben Affleck?
OOOOOooooooo: EDDIE MURPHY!!!!
See? No matter how bad it is, it could always be worse.
You're welcome.
